A new insect species has been found during a three-year background survey of biological resources in Mt. Wuyi National Park, which straddles the provinces of Jiangxi and Fujian in eastern, southeastern China.

The new species named "Ectinoderus Sinicus" belongs to the tribe Ectinoderini.

Ectinoderini comprises two genera and 21 species distributed in the Oriental and northern Australasian regions. Due to their remarkable habits of collecting and utilizing exogenous plant resin to capture their prey, members of Ectinoderini are sometimes called resin bugs.

Mt. Wuyi National Park is the northernmost part of East Asian subtropical region where Ectinoderini has so far been found. The discovery of the species has not only enriched the biodiversity of Mt. Wuyi National Park, but is also of great significance to studying the distribution and the revolution of insects in East Asia.

Mt. Wuyi National Park was officially included in the first batch of China's national parks in October 2021.

Since the national park was founded, a total of 17 new species have been discovered.
