Electric carmaker Tesla is recalling over 80,000 cars in China due to software and seat belt issues, China's top market watchdog said Friday.

The recall covers 67,698 Model S and Model X vehicles imported to China between September 25, 2013 and November 21, 2020, due to software problems affecting the vehicles' battery management system, according to a statement filed with the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Due to software faults, the battery management system may miscalculate and display warnings such as "maintenance required" and "safe parking" on the screen. As a result, the vehicle will gradually lose power, which may lead to extreme collisions.

The company has promised to provide free software updates for the recalled vehicles.

The carmaker will also recall 2,736 imported Model 3 cars manufactured between January and November 2019, and 10,127 China-made ones of the same model produced between October 14, 2019 and September 26, 2022, due to potentially faulty seat belt installation, which Tesla will check and reinstall.

Tesla recalled nearly 30,000 Model X cars in the U.S. last week because of an airbag issue.
