A total of seven people were killed after extreme weather hit Altay, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, local authorities announced on Monday.
Altay has suffered the strongest regional cold wave over the past 10 years since November 20, along with some extreme weather events, such as strong winds and blizzards.
Eight people were lost in the region on National Highway G217, a key link between northern and southern Xinjiang, due to extreme weather, and after a requested rescue at around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, according to a statement from local authorities.
Local police immediately carried out search and rescue work after receiving the call.
At about 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, all eight were found and sent to hospital for treatment. Among them, one person's vital signs are currently stable, while the other seven unfortunately passed away, said the statement.
