Chinese ambassador calls BBC journalist arrest, beating claim distortion of facts
CGTN

Chinese Ambassador to Britain Zheng Zeguang said on Tuesday that the UK must respect facts, act prudently and end its hypocritical practice of double standards over claims that a BBC journalist was arrested and beaten in China's Shanghai.

Zheng said the BBC journalist, who hadn't identified himself at the time, refused to cooperate while local police in Shanghai were trying to ask people who had gathered at a crossroads to leave on Sunday night.

The journalist was then taken away from the scene by police and later released after his identity was verified.

"Everything was conducted within legal procedures," Zheng said in a statement published on Tuesday.

"The British side now claims that the journalist was 'arrested and beaten' by the Chinese police, which is a complete distortion of the facts and malicious slander. China will never accept such unreasonable accusations," he added.

The Chinese ambassador said while they have the right to report news in China, foreign journalists need to consciously follow Chinese laws and regulations.

When conducting reporting and interviews, journalists need to present their press credentials first and not engage in activities incompatible with their capacity as journalists, he said.
