The second edition of the State of Finance for Nature report was released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on Thursday.

The report suggests that investment in nature-based solutions (NbS) should be doubled by 2025 if the world wants to stop biodiversity loss, limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius and achieve land degradation neutrality by 2030.

According to the report, the current finance flow in NbS is $154 billion per year, less than half the $384 billion per annum needed by 2025.

Nature-based solutions are "actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services and resilience and biodiversity benefits," according to the United Nations Environment Assembly.

Many believe that Nature-based solutions could comprehensively provide opportunities to tackle challenges in nature protection, such as global carbon emissions.
