Semeru volcano in Indonesia's East Java province erupted on Sunday, according to the country's National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

The agency warned residents not to conduct any activities within 5 kilometers of the eruption center and to stay 500 meters from riversides due to risks of lava flow.

A local official from the province, Thoriqul Haq, said evacuation of people living near the volcano in East Java province had begun as local media reported that Indonesia has raised its volcano warning to the highest level.

According to BNPB, the volcano began erupting at 2:46 a.m. local time, spewing a column of ash 1.5 kilometers into the air.

Videos posted on social media showed grey ash clouds in nearby areas.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said on Sunday that there was no threat of tsunami, public broadcaster NHK said.

Indonesian authorities raised the warning on Semeru volcano on the island of Java to the highest level after an eruption spewed a column of ash high into the air.
