Sudan's military and civilian leaders on Monday signed a political framework agreement to end the political impasse and institute a transitional civilian authority.
The deal, part of a two-phase political process, was signed by the General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and by multiple civilian groups – notably the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC).
It pledges to establish a new, civilian-led transitional government to guide the country to elections and offers a path forward in the wake of Sudan's stalled transition to democracy.
Sudan has been suffering a political crisis after al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on October 25, 2021 and dissolved the transitional sovereign council and the government.
Since then, the capital Khartoum and other cities have been witnessing continued protests demanding a return to civilian rule.
