The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired more artillery shells into an inter-Korean maritime buffer zone on Tuesday protesting the joint drills between the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States, reported Yonhap News Agency citing the Republic of Korea's military.

ROK's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the DPRK fired about 90 artillery rounds from 10 a.m. through the afternoon from Kosong County in Kangwon Province toward the eastern coast, followed by the detection of around 10 more firings after 6 p.m. from Kumgang County in the same province.

The JCS said it strongly urged Pyongyang to immediately halt the artillery firings.

On Monday, the DPRK has already fired around 130 artillery shells off its eastern and western coasts, in wake of live-fire drills conducted by the ROK and U.S. troops.

"The General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) delivered an order to the specified artillery sub-units on the front to commence live shell fire toward the sea for the purpose of warning about prompt strong counteraction," Korean Central News Agency reported Tuesday.
