China launched its newest solid-fuel carrier rocket Kuaizhou 11 Y-2 on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. (BJT), from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, sending a communication technology experiment satellite into targeted orbit.

The VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) test satellite was launched by the carrier rocket and then entered the planned orbit. The satellite will be used mainly for communications test and key technologies verification of the VDES and the automatic identification system (AIS).

This is the 23rd flight of the Kuaizhou series of launch vehicles developed by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) for commercial use.

Yang Yue, a CASIC expert, said that the rocket has the carrying capacity of one tonne, compared with the 200 kilograms of Kuaizhou 1A, another successful solid-fuel carrier rocket, which attracted much attention in the past year.

Kuaizhou, meaning "fast ship" in Chinese, and its series of solid-fuel rockets take less than four hours to be transported from the assembly buildings to the launch area.
