The Hainan black-crested gibbon is one of man's closest relatives living in the Bawangling National Nature Reserve, on China's southern island province of Hainan. The unique and beautiful creature is one of the rarest monkeys in the world. Its population decreased mainly in the 1970s due to habitat loss. These gibbons are timid and vigilant animals, so it is extremely hard to observe them up close.
