As winter bites, coal and wood-fueled fireplaces are being stoked across Germany by families struggling with rising oil and gas bills. Farm owner Holger List has chosen to light the old fireplace in his family home to stay warm as temperatures drop.
"In the past we used oil and natural gas for heating. But since sanctions were imposed on Russia, we've plunged into a shortage and the price has become very high. This has forced us to use coal and wood once again. At the moment, gas is about 16 times more expensive than wood. Oil is relatively cheaper, only 13 times more expensive. But even the price of wood has gone up and it is now about four times more expensive than before," said List.
