China's largest reserve base of liquefied natural gas (LNG), located in Jiangsu Province's Yancheng City, officially kicked off the start of gas supply for East China on Friday, according to the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

About 2.41 million cubic meters of natural gas were transported by pipeline on the first day and sent to 42 urban users in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces.

Based on the gas consumption of 20 cubic meters per household per month, which is the peak season of gas consumption in winter, this batch of gas can meet the demand of 120,000 households for one month.

The base, also known as "Green Energy Port," has two transportation methods, by oil tanker or by pipeline, opening a new phase for CNOOC's coordination for the LNG supply in east China, Lin Gang, deputy general manager of CNOOC Jiangsu Branch, told China Media Group (CMG).

The base will further enhance the ability to guarantee the supply of natural gas resources in the region, Lin added.

The phase one construction of the base consists of 10 LNG storage tanks. Among them, four tanks – capable of holding 220,000 cubic meters of LNG each – were put into operation in September this year, while the other six tanks – also the world's largest ones that can store 270,000 cubic meters of LNG – are expected to complete construction at the end of 2023.

In September, the CNOOC announced the completion of the roofs of three 270,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks.

Upon the full completion, the Green Energy Port can supply over 5.6 billion cubic meters of LNG annually, CMG reported.
