China has independently developed a large-diameter main bearing for its shield tunneling machine, highlighting the country's advancement in integrated technology design and manufacturing of heavy-duty shield machines.
With a weight of 41 tonnes and a diameter of eight meters, the main bearing broke the sector's domestic record.
The high-end piece was jointly developed by various prominent institutes led by the Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The main bearing is a core component of the shield machine's cutter drive system in tunneling, and this key part will be installed on another super-large shield machine with a diameter of 16 meters.
The brand new component can withstand a maximum axial force of 10 million kilograms during operation, which is approximately equal to the gravity force of about 2,500 adult Asian elephants.
Li Yiyi, an academician at the CAS, said that the bearing was with "first-class roller precision" and was a "high-quality product from raw materials to finished ones."
The successful development of the main bearing demonstrates that China has mastered the integrated technology of independent design, material preparation, precision machining, installation and debugging, and testing and evaluation of large-scale bearings on heavy-duty shield machines.
