The winter ice fishing season recently kicked off in Songyuan City, northeast China's Jilin Province on frozen Chagan Lake, one of China's largest, which is known for this centuries-old tradition.

The traditional technique of boring holes by hand and placing nets beneath the ice to catch fish is listed as a national-level form of intangible cultural heritage.
