Peruvian lawmakers on Tuesday voted 93-30 with one abstention to move up general elections from 2026 to April 2024 in a bid to ease political tensions sparked by the ouster of President Pedro Castillo.

The plan, part of a narrow constitutional amendment, must be ratified in the next annual legislative session for it to take effect.

It's the second time in days for Peruvian lawmakers to try to bring forward general elections after the first attempt failed last week to muster enough votes.

Castillo was removed from office and detained earlier this month after seeking to dissolve Congress to rule by decree.

His supporters subsequently took to the streets in parts of the country. Protests spread and intensified in recent days, leaving more than 20 people dead so far.

They have been demanding President Dina Boluarte to step down and general elections be moved up.
