Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday attended a video conference marking the launch of the Kovykta gas field.
The Kovykta gas field will feed into the Power of Siberia pipeline carrying Russian gas to China.
"We are launching the unique Kovykta gas field, the largest in Eastern Siberia. Its recoverable reserves are 1.8 trillion cubic meters of gas," Putin said.
Putin hailed it as a "significant event" for Russia's energy industry and the whole economy.
The start of operation of the field provides foreign partners with a stable supply capacity and gives a serious boost to the socio-economic development of the eastern regions of Russia, he said.
"The Kovykta gas field has been put into service," said the CEO of Russian energy giant Gazprom, Alexei Miller, after Putin gave the green light for the inauguration.
