China's renminbi share of global payments up in November: SWIFT

The share of the Chinese currency renminbi, or yuan, in global payments rose in November, statistics released Wednesday by a currency tracker showed.

The renminbi's share as a global payment currency was 2.37 percent in November, up from 2.13 percent in October, according to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, a global provider of financial messaging services known by its acronym SWIFT.

The currency remained the fifth most active by value in the world.

In terms of international payments, excluding the euro area, the currency continued to rank sixth in November with a share of 1.63 percent. 

Meanwhile, the Japanese yen's global share dropped to 2.54 percent last month, the lowest since August 2014. 

The U.S. dollar's share fell to 41.38 percent from 42.05 percent in October, while the share of euro usage climbed to 36.12 percent from 34.43 percent.
