High-flying Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford showed no signs of World Cup fatigue as Manchester United's first game since the showpiece event saw them beat Burnley 2-0 at home to advance to the quarterfinals of the League Cup.

Denmark captain Eriksen, who was one of five United players on duty in Qatar to be named in the starting line-up, put the hosts ahead just before the half hour with an accurate finish, while Rashford, who scored three goals for England at the World Cup, doubled the Red Devils' lead just before the hour mark and sealed the victory.

According to stats provider Opta, Eriksen has scored in consecutive games for United after registering no goals in his first 19 games for the English giants. Rashford also maintained his fine form as the 25-year-old has scored in four straight games at Old Trafford.

It's worth mentioning that Rashford's goal was a stunning beauty. He picked up the ball at midfield, beat several defenders along the way before firing a sensational shot past goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell at his far post.

"There is space in front of you and you're almost waiting for the right time to get a pass off but the gap opened and thankfully it went in," Rashford told reporters afterwards.

"It was such a disappointing feeling to be knocked out and you have to pick yourselves up," added the prolific striker, who is still reeling from England's World Cup quarterfinal loss to France. "But there is no time to feel sorry for yourself. You need to pick up results and thankfully we did that today."

United manager Erik ten Hag also singled out Rashford's brilliant performance. "I think he was a constant threat, playing on the back line, on the back four," he told a press conference. "He's so dangerous with his dribbles, with his pace, with his movement without the ball, passing the ball. He runs so much, with so much intensity."

"There is still room for improvement but I am pleased with the win," added the Dutch tactician. "The players are hungry after the World Cup break."

United will return to Premier League action on Tuesday, when they take on Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.
