A spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry stressed that the Chinese government has followed the principle of "people first" and "lives first" when designing epidemic prevention and control measures.

The general situation in China is "predicable and manageable," Mao Ning told reporters at a regular briefing on Friday when asked to comment on the country's transparency regarding the state of its COVID-19.

As the epidemic entering a new phase, China has actively optimized prevention and control measures to make sure it stays scientific, targeted and effective, Mao said.

The country has recently relaxed its COVID-19 restriction measures, a major shift from its "dynamic zero-COVID" policy after experts found the symptoms of the prevalent Omicron variant to be much milder than other strains. The relaxation in turn brought the country an unprecedented infection surge since the start of the coronavirus.

At the briefing, Mao also stressed that the country has "sufficient" medical supplies in general, adding that China will continue to share relevant information with the World Health Organization and the international community in a "responsible manner."
