Chinese President Xi Jinping commended the "pragmatic work" of John Lee, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), during his duty visit to Beijing on Friday, giving full recognition to the new HKSAR government in safeguarding national security and reviving the vitality of the city's economy.

Hong Kong is now making steady progress on the correct track of "One Country, Two Systems," Xi said during their meeting, also praising Lee for enabling Hong Kong to demonstrate a new atmosphere under which patriots administer Hong Kong.

Lee was elected as the sixth-term chief executive of the HKSAR government in May.

"One Country, Two Systems" is a great innovation of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the best institutional arrangement for ensuring sustained prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and Macao after their return to the motherland, Xi noted.

The central government will continue to fully support the chief executive and the SAR government in exercising law-based administration, he told Lee, also voicing hope for the city to better integrate into national development.

On the new journey of the new era, Hong Kong will have a bright future, Xi said.

During the meeting, Xi also heard a report from Lee on Hong Kong's current situation and the HKSAR government's work.
