The Italian government won a vote of confidence by 221 to 152 in the Chamber of Deputies on Friday, having called it to accelerate approval of its expansionary 2023 budget before a year-end deadline.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's first budget drives up next year's deficit to 4.5 percent of gross domestic product from the 3.4 percent forecast in September, allocating more than 21 billion euros ($22.3 billion) in tax breaks and bonuses to help firms and households cope with the energy crisis.

Barring any surprises, the Senate is expected to pass the bill in a second reading next week.
