Two weeks after China relaxed measures against COVID-19, Beijing is emerging from a recent wave of infections from the less deadly Omicron variant. The shift of focus from infection control to case treatment came after three years of protective and control measures that undoubtedly saved millions of lives. But Western media look set to be disappointed for COVID prevention and control in China, says Andy Mok, senior research fellow at the Center for China & Globalization. He says that Western media on COVID in China is really indulging in its worst, ghoulish tendencies by focusing on some extreme and unfortunate events, but things are rapidly bouncing back, and we're looking for a much better 2023.
