China has put into full operation a major power transmission project that sends electricity from the resource-rich west to energy-consuming regions in the east.

The construction of the Baihetan-Zhejiang 800-kilovolt ultra-high-voltage direct current power transmission project was completed and started operation on Friday, according to the State Grid Corporation of China.

The clean electricity generated in Baihetan Hydropower Station will be sent to eastern Zhejiang Province through a transmission line stretching 2,121 km.

The Baihetan hydropower station straddling the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan, is located on the Jinsha River, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

It is the world's second-largest in terms of total installed capacity, second only to the Three Gorges Dam project in the central Chinese province of Hubei.

All hydro-generating units of the hydropower station went fully operational earlier this month.

Baihetan has a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts. It is equipped with 16 hydro-generating units, each with a capacity of one million kilowatts, the largest single-unit capacity in the world.
