China's auto market sold more than 6.8 million units of new energy vehicles (NEV) in 2022 with their market share rising to 25.6 percent of total sales, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) showed on Thursday.

The NEV sector sustained vigorous growth for the year as sales surged 93.4 percent compared with 2021, while its market share grew by 12.1 percentage points.

China's NEV industry has benefited from the country's twin green goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Additionally, the country has extended the purchase tax exemption for NEVs until the end of 2023 in a bid to support the auto sector and boost sales.

China exported 3.1 million units of vehicles last year, 54.4 percent more than in 2021, lifting the sector's overall growth. CAAM attributed the growth to the rising overseas demand and a notable rise in the competitiveness of Chinese auto brands.

Overall vehicle sales rose 2.1 percent year on year in the world's biggest auto market to 26.86 million units in 2022.

CAAM estimated that the Chinese automobile market will continue its upbeat growth momentum and expand to around 3 percent in 2023 thanks to China's pro-consumption measures.
