At least three people were killed and 816 injured in a magnitude-5.9 earthquake that jolted West Azarbaijan Province in northwestern Iran on Saturday night, the province's governor said Sunday.

The quake occurred at 9:44 p.m. local time (1814 GMT) at a depth of seven kilometers with its epicenter at Khoy County, according to media reports.

Several aftershocks followed the main quake, with the biggest one measuring magnitude-4.2, said the Iranian Seismological Center.

The earthquake also led to a temporary power blackout in Khoy County, which has been resolved.

According to reports from the earthquake-affected areas, the extent of damage in rural areas was estimated to be severe.

This is the province's second major earthquake in two weeks. A magnitude-5.4 quake struck Khoy County on January 19, injuring more than 190 people.
