Chinese Qiang people celebrate ethnic New Year in autumn

As part of the diversity of China's people, in addition to celebrating Spring Festival, the Qiang people, mainly living in southwest China's Sichuan Province, are set to hold their own New Year festival in autumn, called the Qiang New Year.

The Qiang New Year celebration usually starts on the first day of the tenth month of the traditional Chinese calendar and lasts for three to five days, during which they hold various performances and activities to pray for prosperity in the coming year, and express their respect to all creatures, the earth and their ancestors.

Dressed in traditional costumes, people hold solemn ceremonies, and then perform sheepskin drum dances under the leadership of the shibi, the priest of Qiang people. Shibi chants traditional epic poems, while people sing, drink and make merry.

Qiang New Year was included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009, while the Qiang sheepskin drum dance was inscribed on China's national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
