Two foreign skiers were killed after an avalanche hit the upper reaches of the Gulmarg Ski Resort in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
"During the rescue ops, 19 foreign nationals and 2 local guides have been rescued," a police statement said. "Unfortunately, 2 foreign nationals lost their lives in the avalanche, and their dead bodies have also been recovered."
Authorities have yet to disclose their nationalities.
But AFP news agency said the two deceased were Polish nationals, citing police officer Amod Nagpuri as saying.
Russian media previously reported eight Russians were rescued and sustained minor injuries.
