The "Survey of Wintering Waterbirds in Hainan in 2023" published by Haikou Duotan Wetland Research Institute puts the number of black-faced spoonbills wintering in south China's Hainan Province at 201, surpassing 200 for the first time. A record 88 black-faced spoonbills were spotted in the Black-faced Spoonbill Nature Reserve in Dongfang City in Hainan Province, the highest in the province.

"The reserve has two mangrove tree species – grey and white. Black-faced spoonbills feed on the benthos living in the mangrove trees, making the area attractive as a habitat. There's relatively little human activity, a situation favored by the relatively shy waterbirds," said Li Haixiong, head of Black-faced Spoonbill Nature Reserve.

The black-faced spoonbill is considered the flagship species of waterbird conservation in East Asia. It's classified as a globally endangered species and is under class one protection in China.

A total of 32,036 waterbirds of 71 species, a sizeable number, were recorded in the survey. Four species of wild birds under class one protection and 10 under class two have been recorded.

"This survey provides us with the basic situation of the species and number of waterbirds in the waterbird habitats in the coastal areas of Hainan in this winter, which is the most basic work for bird protection. By comparing data over successive years, we can see how the bird population is changing, and how their habitat is changing," said Lu Gang, director of the institute.
