The waters of a salt lake in Yuncheng City, north China's Shanxi Province, have recently turned rosy with crystal-like "flowers" growing on the surface. The Dunaliella salina is a type of halophile green unicellular micro-algae that lives in the lake and can produce heme, making itself look red under certain conditions.

In the lake, sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate content is very high. When the temperature drops below minus 5 degrees Celsius, these substances crystallize from the lake, forming a variety of "flowers."

Formed about 50 million years ago, the lake covers an area of 132 square kilometers. It is one of only three inland salt lakes in the world containing sodium sulfate. The amount of salt it contains is similar to that of the Dead Sea and allows humans to float on the lake, so it is known as Dead Sea of China.
