Powerful earthquakes kill nearly 1,300 in Türkiye, Syria

Powerful earthquakes on Monday have claimed nearly 1,300 lives in Türkiye and Syria as a second major quake struck Türkiye on Monday afternoon.

According to Syrian health ministry, 371 people were confirmed dead while 1,089 others injured.

In Türkiye, 912 people were killed and over 5,000 others injured, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said as toll likely to rise further.

The first earthquake occurred at 4:17 a.m. local time (0117 GMT), followed by several aftershocks.

At around 1:24 p.m. (1024 GMT), a 7.6-magnitude quake struck southeastern Türkiye's Kahramanmaras region with a depth of 7 kilometers, local disaster agency said.
