Ancient buildings destroyed by earthquakes in Türkiye
00:56

Powerful earthquakes that shook parts of Türkiye and Syria on February 6 have heavily damaged many historical buildings. Second-century Gaziantep Castle was among the famed structures devastated by the temblor, one of the strongest to hit Türkiye in a century. Parts of the castle's walls and watchtowers were leveled, and others crumbled significantly. Meanwhile, the deadly pre-dawn quake affected several archaeological sites in Syria, including the iconic citadel in the northern city of Aleppo, renowned for its UNESCO-listed historic center and centuries-old covered markets. More than 18 aftershocks measuring four or higher on the Richter scale have been recorded since the initial seismic event.
