The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that hit southern Türkiye on Monday has risen to 18,991, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday in southeastern Türkiye's Adiyaman province.
Erdogan said the country is facing one of its worst disasters ever, and he promised that the government will implement a one-year reconstruction plan in the disaster area to help people rebuild their homes.
Erdogan also said the Turkish authorities' response to the massive earthquakes in the country's south is not as fast as the government wanted. He added some people were robbing markets and attacking businesses, and a state of emergency declared in the area will allow the necessary penalties to be imposed.
