Türkiye is grappling with a massive challenge brought on by the earthquake that flattened a swathe of its towns and cities: How can the hundreds of thousands left homeless in the middle of winter be sheltered? Tent cities are being erected in stadiums and shattered city centers, while Mediterranean and Aegean beach resorts outside the quake zone are opening up hotel rooms for evacuees. With some 6,500 buildings having collapsed and countless more damaged, hundreds of thousands of people lack safe housing. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority estimates that more than 28,000 homeless people have been transported out of the quake zone thus far, including nearly 5,000 by road and at least 23,000 by air.
