The prospect of hundreds of millions of people returning from the cities to their rural hometowns for the Spring Festival raised the specter of a devastating second wave of COVID-19 infections. But it never arrived. This is largely attributable to the fact that, throughout the three years of fighting COVID-19, China has focused on upgrading its medical infrastructure in rural areas. By the end of 2021, there were almost a million primary-level medical and healthcare institutions across China, including 35,000 township health centers and nearly 600,000 village clinics. The number of village doctors has increased to over one million, ensuring that a doctor serves even the remotest rural areas. These efforts have effectively shielded China's 500-million-strong rural population from epidemic peaks.
