Undesirable bar quality is the main cause behind a number of building collapses in the earthquakes which devastated southern Türkiye, according to Wang Tao, an engineering machinist from China who is participating in the relief work with a Chinese aid team in quake-affected Hayat. At least 20,000 residential buildings collapsed in the country during the catastrophe. Wang, deputy director with the Institute of Engineering Mechanics of the China Earthquake Administration, told China Media Group(CMG) that judging from the ruins at the rescue site, reinforced-concrete structures of certain buildings have a very weak capacity to resist earthquakes.
