Following the train derailment and subsequent fire on February 3 in East Palestine, Ohio, the local authorities conducted a so-called "controlled release" of toxic vinyl chloride, ostensibly to prevent an explosion. Thereafter, a large number of animals died in the area and people began to complain of symptoms of illness. Nonetheless, government officials and the U.S. media have remained silent about the incident's impact on the environment and the health of the local population.
