China-Europe freight trains have made 1,459 trips between the China-Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) local economic cooperation demonstration area in Shandong Province and the five Central Asian countries since the area was first proposed in 2018.

China proposed building the demonstration zone in June 2018 when it hosted the 18th SCO Summit in Qingdao, and construction started three months later.
