Asylum applications in the European Union's 27 member-states plus Switzerland and Norway surged by 50 percent year over year in 2022 to nearly one million claims, the highest level since 2016, following the relaxation of COVID-19 travel restrictions, according to preliminary data from the EU Agency for Asylum (EUAA).
