At least two people are dead, six injured and 53 remain missing after an open-pit coal mine collapsed on Wednesday afternoon in Alxa League in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to local authorities.

Eight people had been lifted out of the mine, among whom two had no vital signs. The injured have been taken to the hospital.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, as hundreds of rescuers are working at the scene. The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management has also sent 109 personnel to assist in the rescue efforts.

Local health authorities have sent 15 ambulances and 45 medical staff to treat and transfer the injured. In addition, China's National Health Commission has dispatched an emergency medical team to help out with the treatment.

The incident happened at around 1 p.m., when local firefighters received a call, saying a mine had collapsed over a large area trapping staff and vehicles.

A preliminary investigation showed that more than 50 people were trapped.
