Stand-up comedy brings laughter back to theaters in China

A stage, a mic and a talented performer – that's all it takes to put on a successful live show. Along with an audience, of course. At the start of 2023, SpicyComedy, an English-language comedy club in Shanghai, began welcoming audiences back after an interruption due to COVID-19. The driving force behind the club is Norah Yang, a well-known local stand-up comedian. Her shows, featuring herself and other performers, both Chinese and foreign, are quickly sold out. Young people in particular are attracted by the real-time interaction between performer and audience. As the founder of SpicyComedy, Norah is constantly thinking of ways to attract fresh young talent to join her on stage.
