Xi orders all-out rescue efforts after Inner Mongolia coal mine collapse

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday demanded all-out efforts in search and rescue of the missing and treatment of the injured after a coal mine collapsed in Alxa League, north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the instruction following the incident, urging that the safety of people's lives and property and overall social stability must be maintained.

Xi asked for scientific organization of the rescue, strengthening monitoring and early warning to prevent secondary disasters.

Xi urged efforts to ascertain the cause of the incident as soon as possible, seriously investigate the responsibility and eliminate management loopholes.

All regions and related departments should screen for and rectify all types of risks and hidden dangers and step up precautions, Xi noted.

Noting that there were many people missing in the incident, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for all-out efforts in search and rescue of the buried, ensuring the safety of the rescue and properly dealing with aftermath from the collapse.

Li urged efforts to conduct a serious probe into the incident and release accurate information in a timely manner, adding that related departments should resolutely prevent major and serious accidents to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.

The collapse has so far left two people dead, six injured, and 53 missing.
