Across Europe, where everyone is facing up to the reality of an energy crisis, households are finding innovative ways of warming their homes while keeping energy bills manageable. British pensioner Daphne Edwards, for example, has started burning wood in her fireplace to reduce her dependence on gas. Seventy-one-year-old Daphne and her husband have to work to ensure that they can afford not only to keep warm throughout the winter, but also to put sufficient food on the table. Such are the drastic measure people have resorted to amid the economic uncertainty caused by the rapid increase in energy costs.
