Construction is underway on Shanghai's longest metro train tunnel under the Yangtze River to facilitate a new subway line and further integration of the metropolitan economy. Nearly every district in Shanghai connects to the city's extensive metro train network, except for Chongming District, an island in the Yangtze estuary on the northwestern corner that is home to some 670,000 residents. The new subway line will connect central Shanghai's Pudong New Area with Chongming, China's third largest island.
