The death toll from Sunday's sinking of a migrant ship approaching the Italian shore rose to 64 on Tuesday, including 14 children, after rescuers pulled one more body from the sea.
Rescuers said most of the migrants came from Afghanistan. The others came from countries including Iran, Somalia and Syria. Pakistan's foreign ministry said earlier that 20 Pakistani citizens were on the boat, of which 16 survived and four are missing.
Local authorities said at least 80 people have been rescued, while survivors said the boat had been carrying between 150 to 200 migrants.
Those rescued included three suspected smugglers, who have been detained by the Italian authorities, local media said.
According to reports, the crowded ship had sailed from Türkiye last week headed for the southern Italian region of Calabria. During rough weather, the vessel reportedly sunk after it crashed against rocks.
