Seasonal livestock transfer underway in Xinjiang, NW China
01:17

The early spring livestock transfer is underway in Kunyu City, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, thanks to the support of local authorities and mechanical equipment. Herdsmen in China's northern regions transfer their livestock to new pastures seasonally for rotational grazing. The practice allows grasslands to recover, thus effectively preserving natural resources. Kunyu City is located in southern Xinjiang, adjacent to the world's second-largest shifting sand desert, Taklamakan, with mountainous areas and barren land comprising over 95 percent of its total area. Although the rotation route is less than 100 kilometers long, over 260 herdsmen must transfer more than 80,000 heads of livestock across snowy mountains, valleys and rivers, which greatly increases operational difficulty. This is also Xinjiang's critical lambing season, when 80 percent of the sheep migrating long distances are expecting mothers.
