Water quality in the Yellow River's main stream reached Grade II in 2022 – the highest to date recorded for China's second longest river, according to the national environment authority.
The national system of assessing water quality ranks Grade I as the highest. Reaching Grade II means the water is fit for human consumption after simple purification.

The Yellow River is China's second longest river and is known as the "Mother River." In 2022, Chinese lawmakers voted to adopt the Yellow River Protection Law. It's the country's second piece of legislation to address a specific river basin and takes effect on April 1, 2023.
China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment has pledged to continue working to reduce pollution in all of the country's main river systems in 2023. The ministry says among its priorities will be the monitoring of sewerage discharge from industrial parks into the Yellow River and improving the quality of water in the river's tributaries.
