The first session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) opened on Sunday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Speaking to the press at the "Deputies' Corridor" before the start of the opening meeting, Hou Rong, deputy director of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and an NPC deputy, said that the staff have helped increase the number of pandas at the base 12-fold over the past 30 years, from 18 in 1994 to 237 today. "Our ultimate goal is to help the pandas return to the wild so that they can continue to live in the wild," she added.
