Nobel laureate in economics questions the use and effects of unilateral economic sanctions

The U.S. is increasingly using unilateral sanctions as a diplomatic tool, said Nobel Prize-winning economist Michael Spence as he questioned their effectiveness in a recent interview with CGTN. He said sanctions only have negative consequences for the coherence and cohesion of the global trading and financial system, and that there should be consensus on the extreme circumstances in which sanctions can be used to prevent their abuse.
