The 13th National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, has improved the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics, made good laws to promote development and ensured good governance, according to a work report on Tuesday.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the 13th NPC, made the remarks while delivering a work report at the first session of the 14th NPC.

The NPC Standing Committee has advanced legislative work to promote high-quality development, Li said, adding that a series of laws have been formulated to support high-standard opening-up and accelerate rural revitalization.

It has accelerated legislation relating to national security to give prominence to safeguarding national security in its work, as well as established a system of laws for environmental protection for the promotion of ecological advancement, he said.

Meanwhile, the NPC Standing Committee has carried out legislative work to promote social development and improve the people's well-being and made authorization and reform decisions to ensure national development and major reforms are based on laws, he added.
