The death toll has risen to four after a truck rammed into a crowd in South Korea's Jeollabuk-do Province on Wednesday, as one victim died while receiving treatment in hospital, Yonhap news agency reported.

A total of 16 people were injured, including four critically, and sent to the hospital. The death toll is expected to rise since most of the victims are elderly.

The truck crashed into a crowd of about 20 people waiting in line to vote for a new cooperative leader at 10:30 a.m. in Sunchang, a county in Jeollabuk-do.

The 74-year-old truck driver has been arrested.

"I stepped on the accelerator while trying to hit the brake," he was quoted as saying.
